The idea for this piece started with a painting by the Swedish architect and artist, Carl Larsson, of his wife, Karin (who was also a designer, herself), reading a book [Karin Reading, 1904, Zornsamlingarna, Mora Sweden]. Although Larsson portrayed Karin reading at a table, not in an armchair, the real subject of his painting – and of “Cloud Chair” – is the reading process. It carries her away with no more apparent effort than a cloud requires to ascend the sky.
