GRASSHOPPER
9 INCHES HIGH 1998 BRONZE
The little seated figure began as a drawing of the live model. The pose is a particularly compact one. Her body can be enclosed in a sphere. This provides wonderful economy of means, and an introspective mood. The curve of her back suggested a carapace. This, together with the elastic energy in angles of her legs, gave rise in my mind to the image of the insect we call “grasshopper.”
